Seton Collegiate church has origins from the 1400s when Lord Seton brought a community of priests together. The church here was built in the 15th century and would've been standing when the nearby Battle of Prestonpans happened in 1745.
It looks like it had a taller spire at some stage? But I couldn't find any mention of this.
It's only open Thurs and Fridays during summer. Knowing this I thought I'd get a look around the outside while it was quiet. They have it walled off like fort knox and a locked gate. So plan your visit. Quite why they have it so inaccessible I'm not sure, there are literally 100s of other churches all over Scotland you can wander round.
Still, was nice to wander through the woods for some headspace.

The huge capacity meant I could just stuff my sleeping bag and supplies inside and not have to worry.
Crafted with the escape in mind it features detachable shoulder straps for use as a backpack or a duffel and a rugged exterior ready for life on the road.
Despite its size the straps were comfy enough during the steep hike up a rocky escarpment.

Originally the site of a peel tower, likely to have been built in the reign of William the Lion 1165-1214AD
At one stage Cousland was a significant chapelry belonging to Dunfermline Abbey.
The current ruins are probably from a 15th century castle built by the Lords of Ruthven.
Knights were stationed here during the period of Mary Queen of Scots. Lord Ruthven was involved in the murder of Mary's Italian courtier, David Riccio.
Subsequently the castle changed hands several times along with the lands of Cousland and must have eventually fallen into disrepair.

Located on a partially finished art installation in Fife. A project by reknowned land artist Charles Jencks on an abandoned quarry. He intended to incorporate some kind of memorial to the diaspora. It's easy to think of the links between Scotland and Poland here. There was even coal shipped in from Poland to break the miners strikes in Scotland.

🏴 Tonight's explore was to Hume Castle in the Scottish borders. Hume Castle is the heavily modified remnants of a late 12th century castle. Under the ownership of the powerful Hume or Home family, Wardens of the Eastern March. Who became successively the Lords and Earls of Home.
🏰 What remains is mostly an 18th century folly built on the site.
Once thought of as impregnable the castle was eventually lost in the 16th century from self sabotage (to stop it falling into enemy hands) and surrender to artillery forces during the rough wooing.

A broch is an ancient Scottish round house. Usually with steps to the other levels within it's thick, hollow walls.
They'd stand several metres tall, in a sort of beehive shape.
There are more intact examples but seeing the construction and the steps here gives a pretty good idea of what it might have been like.
The age of these structures blows my mind 🤯

The location once had a fortified homestead. Probably wooden. All that's left is some defensive mounds and a curving ditch.

Possibly removed for excavation? one theory is there was once a round house on top. But it's well maintained and gives a better example of what it might have been like inside.
It's not fully established what earth house (or souterrain) were for but it's thought that rather than a dwelling they were stone lined passages, possibly used as cellars.
This one has a repurposed bronze age stone in its walls with carved cup and ring marks.
Nearby is the historic Tealing doocot (pictured)

a venture around Twizell Castle. Once the site of a medieval tower house. Which was destroyed by a Scottish army in 1496.
The land was latterly owned by Sir Francis Blake who oversaw the creation of the current, now ruined, castle.
