A scramble up Brisly ridge with its pinnacles and airy drops calls for being in the moment in a way that nothing else touches ( amazing how a touch of fear clears the mind 😂).

I had planned a much longer and ambitious route than the one I finished today but once I’d summited Foel-Granol I simply had to explore the enigmatic ancient settlements that are scattered beneath it. I couldn’t resist spending the afternoon there to completely immerse myself. Sometimes you just have to take your time 🤷😃

After a busy week and what seems like endless wet weather today’s surprise spring sunshine was not ...After a busy week and what seems like endless wet weather today’s surprise spring sunshine was not just welcomed, it was completely embraced. I couldn’t shove my boots on quick enough 😂
Scared it might not last long I headed to my nearest haven, the gorgeous woodlands and vistas of the Clywydian Range.
What an utter tonic to view my surroundings through dappled light, see ferns ready to unfurl and hear the woodland birds sing their hearts out above my head. I can’t tell you how much this lifted my spirits.

When spring has sprung it’s always uplifting if a little unpredictable and maybe even a tad wild. I always make ambitious plans no matter what, so rely on decent kit to follow through on them.
In spite of storm Kathleen finally hitting Pembrokeshire I’ve Kayaked to a remote beach, scoped out some climbing routes and explored miles of coastal path all keeping dry and toasty in my @passenger insulated jacket 👏(I was forced to wait out a rain storm in The Ship and retrieve my beanie from a hedge though - small price to pay 😂)

Yesterday I took a quick hike up to the top of Moel Arthur, one of several Iron Age Hillforts on the Clywdian Range.
Built 2500 years ago, this enclosed early Iron Age settlement would have been home to members of the Deceangi tribe. When you stand on the summit looking down at the magnificent views of Denbighshire, Flintshire and right across to the Wirral and Merseyside you can see exactly why.

One of the best locations to find yourself during golden hour is at the summit of a mountain. On Wednesday I managed to catch its flattering glow as I explored Moel Siabod. The sun’s low angle gave me long shadows, heightened contrasts/ separation and a beautiful rich glow to create sunbursts and lens flare with.
If you’ve never attempted to dabble in a little photography during golden hour then have a go, it really is most satisfying. 😀☀️

Sometimes I just need a breath of fresh air followed by a pint and today that is exactly what I got ...Sometimes I just need a breath of fresh air followed by a pint and today that is exactly what I got, as I grabbed a little escapism up on the Clwydian Range. The range is a beautiful string of hills running along the border of England and North East Wales.
The section I can see from my cottage offers silhouettes of two Iron Age hillforts, Penycloddiau and Moel Arthur. Although I didn’t explore the hillforts today, I walked along the summit line to take in the stunning views across the Dee valley, Denbighshire, Snowdonia and the coast. 😀👏

I’m drawn by the childlike excitement I feel when I explore its derelict mining buildings, blast shelters, steep terraces, rubble tips, dripping tunnels and hidden climbing routes. There is an otherworldliness to this carved out landscape. It is a place worthy of pilgrimage not just because of its stunning views or that it’s the second largest quarry of its kind in the world, but because of its eerie beauty borne from the long gone slate industry and the lives of the hardy miners who grafted there.

Waking up to sunshine and blue skies was an unexpected treat so I grabbed the moment and headed off ...Waking up to sunshine and blue skies was an unexpected treat so I grabbed the moment and headed off to Eryri for a healthy bit of escapism.
My route started at the Carneddau range with a pacey slog up to Ffynnon Llugwy reservoir for a rest and a coffee then across and up the steep ascent to the stunning Craig yr Ysfa ridge. The ridge gave me breathtaking views of Tryfan, Pen yr Ole Wen and Carnedd Llewelyn.
The up side of the recent poor weather is that it makes day’s like today even more special. I’m so glad I chose the mountains instead of working in my cottage garden ☺️

After making a decent packed lunch (for those foodies amongst you - sour dough bread with Stilton with sweet chilli chutney and a flask of coffee😋) I headed out to the Black Mountain for a days hiking.
My route started with a rocky path to Foel Fawr then over towards Foel Fraith following the Beacons Way on to Twyn- Swnd and back via Cefn Y Cylchau to catch the sunset.
I really enjoyed the colours of the landscape today. The changing sunlight transformed the landscape and gave me some beautiful views right across to the Mumbles.

The period between Christmas and New Year is always disorientating, normal routines are suspended ...The period between Christmas and New Year is always disorientating, normal routines are suspended and no one seems to remember what day it is. I was able to take advantage of the lull in everyday routines for a little escapism and explore both close to home and further afield.
On New Year’s Eve I grabbed a little quiet time at my favourite local nature reserve only a short stroll from my cottage and on New Years Day I explored further afield and revisited the enigmatic Cwm Eigiau in the Eastern Carneddau (see Dec 3rd post 😊)
For me, getting outside to connect to nature gives me much needed decompression and orientation when things become a little disconnected. Is it just me or do you find this too? 🤔🌳
